Mattress on the floor, low water pressure, uninformed staff

The rooms are adequate in size; however, the beds consisted on mattresses on a platform that was built up off the floor. I haven't seen such a concept since visiting a college frat house. The TV was also on the floor which allowed for watching it only when laying down. The bath ammenities were nice; but, the shower was a mere trickle--not sure if this is an intended GREEN thing or what, but I am sure I still have soap on me that wouldn't rinse off. Above all, the staff knew absolutely nothing about the area (including the famous and noteworthy ones--like Phillipe's). They sent us in the wrong direction twice and in some pretty intemidating areas. We ended up hiring a car service instead to get us back after walking forever and finally finding one hole in the wall for a beer. On the way back, we saw and stopped in several places within one or two blocks of the hotel that were packed full and very interesting to check out. We even found a great place to eat which provided better fare than the Standard's $* sliders offered on the rooftop bar.

I was worried about the attitudes of the hotel employees after reading other reviews. The other reviews couldn't have been further from the truth. Everyone at the hotel was very curteous, friendly and made me feel at home. I was in my room one day and watched the maid clean my room. She absolutely scoured everything. I knew that the room was cleaned to the hilt everyday. I can't say enough good things about this hotel. It was possibly the best hotel that I've ever stayed at. That includes some of the high end chain hotels that I've stayed at.

I have stayed at the Standard downtown before, but previously only for one night in the Wow room which I love. This time I stayed in a Large room which although much smaller was still more than adequate since it was just me. I reveled in the fabulous shower and ridiculously large bed which was such a pleasant change from my futon. All of the staff were exceptionally helpful from the front desk to housekeeping. The restaurant was a high point. The food was absolutely fantastic and reasonably inexpensive considering the quality and portions. I had the spaghetti con gorgonzola and they used homemade noodles! The soups were made fresh each day, and they even had a special set menu for Thanksgiving. Since my family is far away, this was really nice. There were only 2 downsides to my stay; the water smelled of sulfur ever time I first turned it on, and parking is $* a day which for 4 days was more than the cost of another night in the hotel! Oh and I don't recommend the mini bar. They charge $* for a bottle of Smart Water! As far as entertainment in addition to the famous rooftop bar, downtown LA now has a lot to offer with restaurants, the Staples Center, and clubs popping up all over.

friendly, helpful staff, beautiful hotel, great conveniences, good location, a wonderful restaurant, beautiful and artistic interior decoration, a state of the art gym, a rooftop pool and lounge which looks like a backdrop for vogue magazine, and great desk space in the room to work or charge your phone. it makes other hotels seem outdated.
